Recent news regarding Mirafiori and Melfi reaffirms Stellantis’ intentions to focus on Italy, according to John Elkann.
During the inauguration of the new Science Gateway at CERN, Stellantis President John Elkann made some intriguing statements. The scion of the Agnelli family stated that the recent announcements regarding the Melfi and Mirafiori plants, where the production of numerous new cars in the coming years has been confirmed, underscore the automotive group’s commitment to our country. Elkann emphasized that Stellantis is keeping the promises it made concerning its facilities in Italy.
John Elkann was referring to the recent announcement of five new electric models for the Stellantis Melfi plant. These include the new DS 4 Electric and DS 8, the successor to the Jeep Compass, and the new Lancia Gamma and Opel Manta. As for Mirafiori, the production of Maserati vehicles, including the new Quattroporte generation, has been confirmed. The electric Fiat 500 will also continue to be produced in Piedmont, even with the next generation.
John Elkann highlighted Stellantis’ tremendous effort and determination to carry out this challenging process of transitioning to electric mobility, with a focus on our country. This was also an opportunity to pay tribute to Sergio Marchionne, the former CEO of Fiat Chrysler who passed away in 2018. The Auditorium at the Science Gateway bears his name. Elkann recalled how Marchionne was a very curious man with a strong desire to continuously learn and expand his knowledge.
Stellantis, therefore, reaffirms its intentions. We will see if there will also be an agreement with the Italian government to increase car production in our country to over 1 million units, and what potential developments this agreement might bring. Some speculate about relocating the production of the new Fiat Panda to Italy, but at the moment, these are just rumors. There is no confirmation regarding this matter as of now.
